Our Story, Our Mission
The TAFT Foundation was established by Dr. Yajuan Ding to secure funding for and implement the TAFT Program, conceived under the guidance of Dr. Tawheedah Abdullah during a Zoom coaching session at the Stanford University School Leaders Program.
The idea for the TAFT Program was inspired by the facts and data presented in the report titled “Miles To Go” by Dr. Max Altman, Director of Research and Policy at the Southern Education Foundation (SEF).
TAFT, which stands for Tutor and Future Teacher, represents our core mission to empower high-potential students from diverse, low-income backgrounds to serve as tutors and mentors to provide free peer tutoring, earn scholarships, and become future educators.
The name TAFT was created by the founder of the TAFT Foundation on March 21, 2025, during a visit to Aranya, a beautiful beach community located in Hebei, China, alongside two mothers of Dr. Ding’s son’s high school classmates. This name captures the essence of our initiative concisely and memorably.
Our slogan, ‘Relying on myself is more reliable than relying on others!‘, embodies the program’s self-reliant spirit. At TAFT, this means encouraging students to take ownership of their learning, develop leadership through service to others, and grow through collaboration, mentorship, and peer support. Through mentorship, tutoring opportunities, and leadership training, we instill this principle in our students.
As we move forward, the TAFT Foundation is committed to expanding the reach and impact of the TAFT Program, fostering a new generation of educators who will champion equity in education and drive transformative change within their communities.
Interpretation of the Rainbow-Themed Logo
The rainbow-themed logo, designed by the founder of the TAFT Program, serves as a powerful visual metaphor for the TAFT Program. The rainbow is widely recognized as a symbol of hope and promise, ideals at the core of what TAFT stands for. Our program extends a message of hope to students from low-income and minority backgrounds, many of whom face significant challenges in their educational journey.
A distinctive feature of the logo is the rainbow pattern integrated into the letters “TAFT.” This design choice carries a profound meaning. The progression of the rainbow colors from left to right mirrors the transformative journey of students involved in the TAFT program. For the tutors, it signifies their growth from being learners to becoming educators and leaders. For the tutees, it represents their path from struggling with academic challenges to achieving success and confidence.
The evolution of the rainbow colors can also be seen as a metaphor for the students’ lives. It illustrates a journey of personal and academic growth, starting from a position of limited opportunities and progressing toward a future filled with limitless possibilities. The logo embodies the TAFT program’s conviction in the potential of every student to grow, adapt, and thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.
In essence, the logo serves not only as a visual identifier for the TAFT program but also as a representation of its mission and values. It embodies the hope, opportunity, and transformative power of education that we strive to deliver to all our students.
